Monday Magic - Crafty Wood Cut-outs Tutorial & Giveaway

I'm so excited to be able to share about a fabulous crafty store that is just a few blocks away from my house. It is the place to go for cute wooden letters and wood crafts. They also have an online store, so even if you don't live in Utah - you can purchase these fabulous projects.

Crafty Wood Cutouts
631 North 1200 West
Orem, Utah

It has been open for not quite a year and I have driven past it several times, but I finally had the opportunity to go inside. When I walked in, I immediately wanted every single project they sell!

The wood kits come pre-packaged with all of the pieces you need already cut and sanded for you.  Did you read that - they are already sanded for you! How amazing is that! The store also carries paper, glitter, paint, wire, embellishments, ribbon, and Mod Podge to help you decorate your projects. They also offer classes, reasonable prices, and they even have a fun kids place, with coloring pages, books, and movies to keep your kids entertained while you wander the store. You can bet that I will be frequenting this store often - can you say Christmas presents?

After wandering around in awe, I just couldn't seem to narrow down my choice for a first project. So I went ahead and chose TWO! Halloween is coming up and I thought I needed a new decoration! I chose the BOO Letter Set and the Picket Fence.

Example at the store

As I began gathering supplies to complete my project, my husband had the amazing idea that I should use my own designs. I LOVED it and jumped at the chance to create a new Halloween kit! So I spent the next couple of days designing a kit with this project in mind. When I finished the papers that I wanted to use for my BOO project, I had them printed at Persnickety Prints and then I was finally set to go!

to come to my store soon!

Okay everyone - I'm not honestly that crafty when it comes in the traditional sense. Give me some digital scrapbooking and design on the computer and I can do fine, but sometimes when it comes to working with real craft stuff - I goof up.

So that being said - this craft turned out pretty awesome. I'm actually really happy with it and I did goof up a little, but I'm learning and getting better - and actually I really LOVED it. So - I promise that these wood craft projects are fun and not hard at all - if I can do it, you can do it.

I loved it enough that I have some plans of making more for Christmas presents and I'm really excited.  But anyways, this BOO project only took me, probably 1 1/2 hours total to make. I actually did the painting on one day and the decorating on a different day.

So here are my unfinished wood pieces of the BOO and the fence, just taken out of the package.

Time to Paint. I have this thing with brown. I love it. I love it with every color - basically its my black. So, to be different - I used brown for my fence and the back and sides of all the pieces.

I painted the skull eyes and the ghost eyes and mouth.  After the paint dried, I added just a little bit of glitter. (I had some clear glitter paint that I used. Next time, I'll use mod podge and glitter.)

I also painted a bit of a border around the front of the letters - just in case the paper isn't exactly cut to the edge.

So after the paint dried, I used super glue (I didn't have wood glue) to piece the fence pieces together and it was done!

Next, I traced the letters onto my papers. I flipped the letters upside down and traced it on the back of the scrapbook paper. I then cut out it out using scissors. For the inside of the B, I actually used an exacto knife.

I applied a layer of mod podge a little at time and then smoothed out the paper onto the letters.

Then I applied another layer of mod podge over the top of the paper and let it dry.

Unfortunately, here is where I goofed. I didn't smooth the paper very good on the skull and I got an air bubble. After the mod podge dried, I took a safety pin and made a small hole where the air bubble was and then I smoothed it out with my hands the best I could. It actually worked pretty well!  I then applied another coat of mod podge.

After the mod podge completely dried, I began to decorate. I used brown polka dot ribbon and spider web ribbon tied into a bow for the B.I also added a glow-in-the dark spider underneath the ribbon.

For the Skull (O), I added 3 jewels to the bottom and then another glow-in-the-dark plastics spider. I glued the eyes on with super glue.

I then added 3 jewels to the "tail" of the Ghost (O) and another spider and of course glued the face on with super glue.

And then I was done! I love how it turned out! What do you think?

So, how would you like your own wood craft project?
